With over 40 years of combined construction experience our skills are wide ranging and varied, we are accomplished in conventional building, using non toxic materials, as well as natural building construction methods including logs, earth, strawbale and hemp. This gives us a unique understanding and ability of how to best use these approaches individually and fuse them together to manifest our clients vision.

This custom-designed, 350 square metre structure is the largest traditional timber frame and hempcrete structure in Aotearoa. In addition, it is the first time these materials have come together for a commercial build. Internally, the large Lusitanica timbers, which were locally-sourced, milled and hand-crafted onsite, frame the hempcrete walls with contrasting texture and colour. The soaring structure of the grand hall harmonises with the cosy spaces of both the lounge and mezzanine; offering a variety of spaces for the community to gather. Externally, the delightful lime plaster walls balances macrocarpa weatherboards with a stunning synergy of materials.
Elemental Design and Build worked closely with the client from the first design ideas and concept drawings, to handing this beautiful building over to the community nearly 4 years later. We managed all aspects of the build, assisting the engineers and architects with the design for consent, milling and handcrafting the timber frame, bringing together a cohesive building team that became a brotherhood, guiding conventional tradies on how to work with these natural materials, contracting specialists and project managing the whole build to a high quality finish.
